PLAY THERAPY DIMENSIONS MODEL

Understanding the Play Therapy Dimensions Model

The Play Therapy Dimensions Model is an integrative framework designed to support children’s growth and healing through play. It provides a structured way to navigate the complexities of therapy by focusing on two key dimensions: Directiveness and Consciousness.

  • Directiveness refers to the therapist’s level of involvement and interpretation during sessions, ranging from non-directive to more directive approaches.

  • Consciousness reflects the child’s expressions in play, whether through symbolic, verbal, or non-verbal activities, offering insight into their inner world.

These dimensions intersect to form four quadrants, allowing therapists to tailor their approach to meet each child’s unique needs. Movement between these quadrants—whether within a session or across multiple sessions—is guided by the child’s progress and therapeutic goals.

This flexible model not only integrates various play therapy modalities but also provides tools for therapists to track changes, optimise decision-making, and involve families in the therapy process. It encourages collaboration with parents to set goals and monitor progress, ensuring a holistic and supportive experience for the child.

The Play Therapy Dimensions Model is grounded in evidence-based practice and is adaptable to both individual and systemic approaches, making it a valuable tool for fostering meaningful change through play.
